Reviving Your Routine

How to Structure Your Life

There are two important questions everyone needs to be able to answer:

What is your goal in life? And how do you plan on getting there?

Both questions may not seem easy to answer however, it’s very important to be able to answer them. Whatever your goal may be, it most definitely involves being content and finding a level of success. This should involve success in this life and in the next – as it’s imperative to not neglect one or the other. By ensuring you are considering both, bi’thnillah you everyday life can contain masses of barakah.

Our goal in this life is to metaphorically collect as many good deeds as possible in attempt to please Allah (S.W) and in doing so, earning our place in Jannah (bi’ithnillah). This means our daily habits need to contain a level of spiritual, physical, and mental actions.

If you once had a routine which you were proud of and lost motivation – don’t fret! Our goal is to help you revive your routine and even aid you in improving it! By following the practical steps below, you are making a leap in the right direction to restructuring your life!

1. Make a to-do list for the next day:

The night before, take a pen and notebook and list out goals you want to achieve the next day. If you can, dedicate an entire notebook to list making and planning your day. Keep the goals realistic and try not to overload yourself – the goal is the achieve your goals, not get stressed out by them!

2. Create a morning routine:

It doesn’t have to be complicated – if anything, the simpler the better. It can look something like this: Fajr, athkaar, stretch, honey and warm water on an empty stomach (as recommended by the sunnah), have breakfast whilst reading a book. Go through your checklist from the night before and start with what you feel will be the most time-consuming.

    3. Have a Quran plan:

    Read a couple of pages after each salah, in the morning or in the evening. Or create a plan according to what your day may look like. Remember, this needs to be a priority in your day – nothing is more important than actions that allow you to connect with your Lord!

    4. Create a wind-down routine:

    It’s important to have something to look forward to at the end of the day. Having a routine dedicated to your relaxation and winding down can be just that. This could involve reading your favourite book whilst having a hot drink. Go through your accomplishments from your previous list and make your list for the next day.

    5. Aim to get into bed after Isha salah:

    Try to be in bed after the final salah and if the salah time is very early where you are, start your wind-down routine after the prayer. Aim to get your list more than half completed before Maghreb. The goal is to not be busy in your evenings to allow your mind and body to rest.

    And remember...

    Not every day looks the same and that’s perfectly okay! The goal is to have a routine to stick to however, there will be days where that may not be possible. Knowing you have a routine in the first place can be a form of motivation and structure. Ask Allah to grant you ease as we plan and Allah plans, and Allah is the best of planners!

    رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي


    Rabbish rah lee sadree Wa yassir leee amree Wahlul ‘uqdatan milli saanee Yafqahoo qawlee


    “My Lord, expand for me my breast [with assurance] And ease for me my task and untie the knot from my tongue That they may understand my speech.”


    (Surah Ta-Ha Ayah 25-28)
